Distinguished Professor Dr. Md. Sharaf Uddin comes off a Muslim noble family in the district of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dr. Sharaf obtained his BSc Ag (Hons.) from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU)-1987, MS (Horticulture) from Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA), Bangladesh-1993, MS (PGRCM) from University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Philippines-2003 and PhD (Horticulture) from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh-2009. Before holding the position of professor (October 2017) he hold the position of Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Agroforestry and Environmental Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Sylhet Agricultural university. Prior to his appointment as Associate Professor at Sylhet Agricultural University, he was Senior Scientist (Horticulture) at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI)-1995-2013, Consultant at Bangladesh Economic Growth Program Project under the Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh, and Arboriculturist at Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation. He conducts research related to plant biodiversity conservation and management, horticulture breeding, climate smart agriculture, food and nutritional security, agroforestry and environmental issues. Dr. Sharaf has received awards from several organizations in recognition of his research and professional contributions. He is the recipient of the COGENT-SEARCA scholarship and HRC scholarship to pursue his MS (Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Management) and PhD (Horticulture) degree at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Philippines and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh. He received award from Director General of BARI for recognition as a good scientist and farm manager for managing the research farm efficiently. He is also being engaged himself with several national and international organizations like ‘Save the Nature’ and ‘International Students’ Association’ at UPLB during his study at UPLB, Philippines, Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (BAPA), Ecological Society of Bangladesh (ESB), Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), Bangladesh Society for Horticultural Science (BSHS).
Dr. Sharaf has authored and co-authored over 60 technical articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings, books, booklet and leaflets dealing with issues of production, management and breeding of horticultural crop , agronomic practices, agroforestry, plant biodiversity, plant genetic resources conservation and management, tree-crop interaction, climate smart agriculture. Dr. Sharaf supervised and evaluated more than three dozens of MS students Theses research related to agroforestry, environmental science, horticulture, entomology, biotechnology, Crop botany and tea production technology, Business and finance at Sylhet Agricultural University and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh. Besides, Dr. Sharaf is a reviewer of more than a dozens of national and international journal articles. He is also a vital member of different national committee related to environmental issues.
Dr. Sharaf is happily married with Husna Ara Begum (Shirin) and blessed with a daughter Tasfia Tasnim Moon.
