Prof. Abiodun Ayodele Ojo is an international Analytical and Forensic Chemist, with a research focus on the studies of biogeochemistry of environmental pollutants in terrestrial and marine ecosystem, analytical instrumental development, and evaluation of plant species for the treatment of human diseases. His competencies cover studies of human absorption and excretion, genetic analysis and molecular identification and spectroscopic analysis of herbal preparations in disease management. He obtained a first-class bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, Nigeria in 1985 and a Ph.D. in Analytical Environmental Chemistry from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia Canada in 1995.
Prof. Abiodun A. Ojo was the immediate past Provost of the College of Sciences at Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD). As the then Provost, he supervised five major departments, including Biological Sciences (Microbiology, Biology & Biotechnology programmes), Chemical Sciences (Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry & Petroleum Chemistry Programmes), Geology, Mathematical & Physical Sciences (Mathematics, Statistics, Physics with Electronics, Computer Sciences) and Agricultural Sciences. During his time as provost, Prof. Ojo obtained 100% accreditation of all the programs in the college with the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC), which is the Federal Government accrediting body for all universities in Nigeria. He was responsible for the smooth running of the college activities including effective teaching, hitch-free conducts of examinations and processing of results, as well as defining the culture of research and grant writing activities. During his time as provost, the college obtained a grant of US$2million for youth empowerment in agriculture from the International Funds for Agriculture (IFAD) for three years. He is the Deputy Chairman of the ABUAD/IFAD/YEASA Committee in charge of the activities of the YEASA (Youth Employment in Agribusiness and Sustainable Agriculture) programme.
Previously at Atlanta Metropolitan State College in the USA, he was the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Atlanta Metropolitan State College Mathematics Engineering Science Alliance (AMSC-MESA) with an annual grant of
40,000.00. The PSLSAMP was for the recruitment and education of minorities’ students in science, mathematics and engineering, as well as for the different yearly campus/external activities including disbursement of funds to PLSAMP scholars. As the only professor of chemistry at Bainbridge State College , he was in charge of procurement of laboratory chemicals and the supervision of laboratory technologists and lab assistants. At Albany State University, Prof. Ojo was the Forensic Science Program Coordinator from 2000 to 2002, and was responsible for the successful 2001/2002 forensic science program positive accreditation evaluation report.
At the University of British Columbia (UBC), Prof Ojo was a supervising teaching assistant in the Chemistry undergraduate program: he mentored and coordinated the activities and performance of other graduate teaching assistants from 1989 to 1994. Between 1995 and 1997, he served a two -year postdoctoral fellowship, in the gas-processing laboratory of the Chemical Engineering Department at UBC working on an external, industrially funded natural gas processing project. The project resulted in a successful resolution of the problem caused by degradation of natural gas during processing with “ sweetening” solvents used for the purification of natural gases utilized in industries and for residential purposes supplied by a gas processing company in British Columbia, Canada.
As a robust academic, Prof. Ojo is driven by the triple objectives of teaching, research and community service. Altogether, Prof. Ojo has sixty scientific publications and twenty-one conference and workshop papers, as well as ten technical and grant reports. Prof. . Abiodun A. Ojo is a diligent, articulate and resourceful individual and a team player with successful teaching records of accomplishment from universities abroad and in Nigeria. He is honest, amiable and adaptable to any multicultural environment. He is currently the UNESCO Chair in Entrepreneurship Education for Sustainable Development in Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti. The ABUAD UNESCO Chair in cooperation with the Founder of the University and the ABUAD Farm, trains youths – school leavers, graduates, unemployed youth and women , especially girls in livestock production (poultry, piggery, and fishery), mango and Moringa plantation, value chain products of Mango and Moringa, and production and feeds for poultry and fish, as well as vocational trades. The ABUAD UNESCO Chair collaborates with the IFAD-YEASA program to train youths in Agribusiness since 2019 till date. Several Colleges of Education and University Students Associations have invited Prof. Ojo to deliver guest lectures during their annual celebrations. He is passionate about youth activities and programs that provides opportunities for young people to excel in life.
