Dr. W.M. Niluni M. Wijesundara is a highly accomplished Senior Lecturer (Grade II) at the Department of Food Science and Technology within the Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture at Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka. With a distinguished academic background, Dr. Wijesundara earned her Ph.D. in Biology from Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2022, following an MSc in Agriculture and an MSc in Food Science and Technology from Dalhousie University and the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, respectively. She completed her BSc in Agricultural Technology and Management with honors from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
Dr. Wijesundara’s research interests primarily focus on the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of natural compounds, particularly essential oils, against pathogens like Streptococcus pyogenes. Her significant contributions in this area are evident through numerous publications in reputable scientific journals and presentations at various international conferences.
Her academic prowess is complemented by a rich array of scholarships, awards, and accolades, including the Graduate Research Award at the Annual Science Atlantic Nutrition and Food Conference and the Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship. Dr. Wijesundara’s commitment to academia extends beyond research, as demonstrated by her extensive teaching experience both in Sri Lanka and Canada. She has also actively engaged in academic supervision, examination, and curriculum development.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Dr. Wijesundara is deeply involved in professional development activities, serving as a reviewer for various scientific conferences and research grant proposals. She has also demonstrated strong leadership skills through her roles in coordinating university initiatives and volunteering for community events.
