PROFESSOR PAUL KAMAU MBUGUA: PROFILE
Prof. Paul Kamau Mbugua is a Full Professor wef 31st July 2024, in Plant Sciences at Kenyatta University where he has taught for 36 years. He is a holder of S1 Certificate in Science teaching at High Schools from Kenya Science Teachers College (KSTC), a B.Ed. degree in Science from University of Nairobi (UoN), M.Sc. degree in Plant Taxonomy from Kenyatta University (KU) and a Ph.D. in Plant Taxonomy from University of Reading – England. As a scholar, he has many publications in refereed journals and has made presentations in /attended many international scholarly conferences locally and abroad. He is also actively involved in supervision of Masters and Ph.D. students’ theses and an External Examiner in several universities such as University of Nairobi, Egerton University, Catholic University of East Africa, Karatina University and lately Technical University of Kenya. He holds membership in the following academic bodies: AETFAT, a body dealing with study of wild African vegetation; People and Plants, an international body dealing with plants conservation and publications; PROTA, dealing with compilation of Tropical African Plants of economic importance to man; FORUM, an organization dealing with research funding in 10 African universities in Eastern and Southern Africa. Nationally, he has been a member of Global Environmental Facility (GEF) National Review Panel of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) within the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation – Kenya Government; was also appointed to the National Committee working on the National Policy on Traditional Medicine and Medicinal Plants with the National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development, Ministry of Planning and National Development. He was the first Director of the Directorate of Disability Services Kenyatta University, 2010-2017. Subsequently, he is currently a member of Kenyatta University Disability Awareness Day Committee for the Directorate of Disability Services. He has also been a Board Member of Association of the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) for five years. He is involved in many community services such as Church Eldership, Deacon Board at Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM) and Boards of Management (BOM) in High Schools. He is currently the Chairman to Kwa Ngethe Secondary School, BOM. Currently, he is the President of Society of Ethnobotany (SEB), Kenya Branch and Society of Christian Scholars (SCS), Kenya Chapter. He was awarded the National Outstanding Research Award (NORA) by the National Research Fund Festival, Government of Kenya on 23rd August, 2024. Prof. Mbugua is married to Dr. Elizabeth Wangui Kamau and is a father of two adult sons – Samson Mbugua and David Kariuki. He is also a grandfather to Nemaiyan Gakengi Mbugua, daughter to Mr. Samson and Mrs. Stella Mbugua.
