Nushrat Azam is currently pursuing her PhD in Literature & Creative Writing with the Faculty of Arts & Education at Charles Sturt University. Currently on study leave, Nushrat is a lecturer in the School of Communications, Language & Literature at Fiji National University in Suva, Fiji Islands. She is an active researcher who has a keen interest in feminism and gender performativity. She has completed her Master of Arts in Literature from The University of the South Pacific in Fiji, and her Master’s Thesis focused on the voices and silences of female characters in Postcolonial Literature.
Her book, The Girl with a Mirror – A Collection of Short Stories, was published in June 2021. The book is a semi-autobiographical fiction with six short stories about normal girls who see themselves and the world through their mirrors, exploring women’s voices, identity, and empowerment. Nushrat’s research articles focus on women’s voices, and her journal article “Madwoman in the Postcolonial Era” is used as required reading for Literature courses in some European universities and has also been cited by many researchers. Her short stories, such as “Unspread Wings: From Crossing Streets to Crossing Ocean,” “Dusting Stones Buried Deep (A Tale of First Love, Betrayal & Psychological Abuse),” “A Step Away from the Dance Floor,” and “The Ship that Sailed (Daddy’s Diaries),” got published in a Canadian feminist magazine.
