Biography
Sarawat Rashid is a distinguished anthropologist and development specialist with over 20 years of professional experience. Currently, he serves as the Joint Director and Director of the Community Development Center (CCD) at the Rural Development Academy (RDA) in Bogura, Bangladesh. Born on September 5, 1981, Sarawat has dedicated his career to advancing rural development, gender equity, and public health. Sarawat’s academic journey began at Rajshahi University, where he completed his Bachelor of Social Science (Honors) in Anthropology in 2002 and a Master of Social Science in Anthropology in 2003. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the same institution, further deepening his expertise in the field. Over the years, he has contributed significantly to research and action projects, producing 40 publications, including 26 international articles, and participating in 26 conferences worldwide. His work addresses pressing issues such as maternal and neonatal health, rural governance, and gender inclusivity. Professionally, Sarawat has held impactful roles. Since 2012, he has been at the RDA, conducting research and leading training initiatives for women leaders, rural youth, and local government representatives. Prior to this, he worked as a Research Associate at BRAC, the world’s largest NGO, from 2006 to 2012, where he focused on maternal and child health research. He also served as a Research and Documentation Officer at Shachetan NGO, contributing to project documentation, media workshops, and community-based research. Sarawat’s research explores diverse themes, including the socio-cultural impact of early marriage, healthcare-seeking behaviors in marginalized communities, and the role of gender in rural development. His notable works include studies on the effects of psychosocial anxiety during the COVID-19 lockdown and the evaluation of maternal health programs in Bangladesh. These contributions have cemented his reputation as a thought leader in his field. Internationally, Sarawat has participated in training and conferences in countries such as India, Kenya, and the UK, enhancing his global perspective on development challenges. Fluent in English and Bangla, he is skilled in participatory research methods and advanced qualitative analysis, which he applies to his projects and publications. With a career marked by innovation and dedication, Sarawat Rashid remains committed to creating sustainable solutions for rural development and gender equity, empowering communities through research, training, and policy advocacy.
