Essau Kumwembe is a Zambian transport and logistics professional, railway safety specialist, and researcher with 16 years of experience at the Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA). He currently serves as a Regional Safety Officer (Zambia), where he is responsible for accident investigation, safety performance reporting, monitoring railway operations, ensuring compliance with train-working regulations, developing accident prevention programmes, and conducting safety awareness and training activities. Previously, he served as a Senior Operations Officer, managing railway traffic and operations at district level, train planning and marshaling, cost control, workplace safety, discipline, accident analysis, reporting, and conflict management. He holds a Master’s degree in Traffic and Transportation Engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University, a Bachelor of Commerce in Logistics and Transport from the University of Africa, and is a PhD candidate in Development Studies specializing in Logistics and Transport. He has also undertaken professional training in railway operations and management, green transportation, applied research and data analysis, business planning, and computer applications, and is a Chartered Fellow of the Zambia Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.His research interests and publications focus on Transport and Logistics, Railway Operations, Railway Safety, Transportation Engineering, Road Safety, Traffic Management, Transport Policy, Supply Chain and Freight Transport, and Sustainable Transportation. His scholarly work has examined transport policy and traffic congestion control in Zambia, railway safety policy and financial performance, passenger service quality, road traffic accident risk mitigation, and pricing strategies for container road–rail transportation using game theory. His extensive operational experience in railway management, combined with research and analytical skills, provides practical and academic expertise in transportation systems and logistics.
