Dr. Ramanath Pandey (b. January 1, 1960 – Nalanda, Bihar) is a distinguished Indian scholar, author, and professor whose academic career spans over four decades in the fields of Sanskrit, Indian Philosophy, Buddhist Studies, and Indological Research. Currently serving as Professor of Indic Studies at Parshwanath Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, he is a leading voice in interpreting and applying ancient Indian wisdom to modern interdisciplinary contexts.
After earning his Ph.D. from Ranchi University in 1989 with a pioneering linguistic study of Kalidasa’s dramas, Dr. Pandey built a rich academic portfolio that integrates Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, Logic, and Comparative Religious Studies. He earlier obtained his M.Phil. from the University of Delhi, focusing on Abhidhamma and Vipassana traditions, and has since developed expertise in both classical and Buddhist Sanskrit, Prakrit languages, and Chinese Buddhist texts.
Dr. Pandey served as Research Officer at the Oriental Institute, M.S. University of Baroda (2004–2022) and Research Associate at the Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Delhi (1995–2001). He was also Visiting Professor of Hindu Studies at Central Sanskrit University, Gujarat (2024–25) and has taught in numerous institutions including Maharaja Agrasen College, University of Delhi.
An erudite speaker and writer, he has delivered lectures internationally in Peru, Poland, Japan, Canada, and Nepal, and has presented scholarly papers in over 50 international and national conferences. His research explores core themes like karma doctrine, ethics, Vedic philosophy, Kalidasa’s literature, cognitive science, and Jain-Buddhist intersections.
Dr. Pandey has authored and edited multiple seminal books, including “Kalidasa ke Rupakon ki Bhasha Samracana” and critical editions on Mahabhashya and Apabhramsa Sutras of Hemacandra. He has published widely in reputed journals and contributed chapters to academic volumes addressing both ancient thought and contemporary concerns.
As Secretary of the Indian Society for Indic Studies (InSIS) and a Board Member of ISUD (USA), Dr. Pandey has played a key role in promoting India’s intellectual heritage globally. He has organized numerous conferences on ancient Indian knowledge systems and is respected for his innovative thinking, poetic sensibility, and commitment to education and ethical scholarship.
He is fluent in Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Pali, Prakrit, Magadhi, and has working knowledge of Gujarati, Buddhist Sanskrit, Urdu, and Classical Chinese.
